How to Grow and Care For Marigold

When to Plant Marigolds?

Plant Marigolds in spring once all danger of frost has passed. They will bloom throughout the summer into fall. Marigold normally will last until a hard frost. Marigold is very easy to grow from sowing seeds directly into soil.

What Type of Soil Do Marigolds Like?

Marigold will grow in just about any type of soil, so long as it is well-draining.

Does Marigold Need Sun or Shade?

Marigold will perform best in full-sun. They can survive in partial sun, but won’t produce quite as many blooms.

How Often to Water Marigold

Marigold requires frequent watering during the first few weeks while establishing. Marigold has some drought-tolerance once established, but prefers slightly moist soil. Root rot and fungal issues can be a problem if Marigolds are kept in overly moist and/or shady conditions.

When to Fertilize Marigold

Fertilizing Marigolds is not really needed. Over-fertilized Marigolds will produce more foliage than blooms.

Potential Pests & Diseases

  • Aphids

  • Spider mites
